ELLICOTT CITY, Md.
The Alliance of Sleep Apnea Partners (ASAP) announces the return of Sleep Apnea Education Week, which runs from April 18 to 26, ending on the anniversary of ASAP’s founding as a nonprofit. In 2024, ASAP launched this initiative to bring sleep apnea into the national spotlight, raising public awareness and increasing understanding of sleep apnea as a chronic disease. Each year our goal is the same – to make sleep apnea a national priority.

Sleep apnea affects an estimated 54 million Americans, yet it’s believed that 80% remain undiagnosed. It is a chronic disease with far reaching consequences such as risk for heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and cognitive decline. The economic and societal burden is enormous, with the cost of untreated sleep apnea at $150 billion a year in the United States. In addition to its implications for both individual health and public health systems, sleep apnea can affect partners and families of those suffering from the chronic disease.

Throughout Sleep Apnea Education Week, ASAP will bring national attention to this serious sleep and breathing disorder through collaborating with partner organizations, initiating significant conversations through community interactions, connecting those affected with resources and support, and helping individuals and families access the care needed for better health outcomes.

“At ASAP, we recognize the critical role that partnership and collaboration play in advancing education and awareness around sleep apnea,” said Dr. Monica Mallampalli, President and CEO. “This year, through Sleep Apnea Education Week, we are collaborating with partners across a wide spectrum of disease states and conditions to spark meaningful conversations about sleep apnea and improving overall health outcomes for patients.”

As part of the campaign, ASAP is providing a comprehensive social media toolkit so that patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and partner organizations can participate in increasing education around this chronic disease. Thank you to our campaign sponsors for supporting this year’s initiative: Eli Lily and Company, Resmed, Inspire Medical, and Apnimed.
